I was hoping to get this newsletter out on Sunday since the on call didn’t seem to be super busy. Literally as I sat down to right it, the phone started going off the hook. Such is the nature of on call!
It’s been a rather full week of working everyday and also doing some volunteering outside of work. This week, it was teaching basic life support and how to use a defibrillator at one of the local mosques. Gotta say that the turn out was quite decent for a Friday night at 830pm!
It might be obvious to everyone but me, but I really don’t get the time to do basic life things when the workload happens to take up all 7 days! Even if one of them is a half day!
Especially at this time of year with end of year functions etc, there’s just a lot of other events that take up the time and don’t leave much room for writing emails or editing podcasts!
One thing I saw earlier this year (and I’ll try to find it for next week’s newsletter) was a video about how not to procrastinate. The first thing it asked was “are you actually procrastinating or are you too busy?”. I routinely beat myself up about wasting time, but that video made me stop to consider where I have rest time scheduled and maybe I should do something mind numbing here and there to recharge.
As a result, I’m going to not get too upset if I don’t make something creative each week, especially if they’re pretty busy weeks like this week just gone was. It’s a bit of a slippery slope however given that having more of a habit is what ensures that you get better/faster at doing the creating in the first place. How you balance all that… I have no idea…
With the end of year fast approaching, it’s making me a bit more reflective on the blur of the last few years. I’ve realised I’m good at hitting most of my resolutions except for the ones in health/fitness. Arguably the most important for most people. I’m toying with the idea of just having that as the only resolution for next year.
What do you think of that plan?
