Weekly Summary [3th Aug 2025]

It was the first week of my new work roster and it was glorious! I half wish I had made some of these changes a while ago to be honest…

  • After 9 years, I finally cut back clinical hours at my public practice to half time. This is actually the hours I originally applied for!
  • While it sounds dramatic, it just means that I have maybe 1 half day a week off during the week – but just that is soooo nice! I managed to get some errands done, rang some patients and managed to do this without stressing about how to fit it all in and not ring people at some odd hour of the day after work
  • Had time to actually get coffee during the busy hours
  • Interesting/unexpected paediatric things happened during an anaesthetic – was all ok in the end but it reminded me of a similar case over a decade ago in a totally different situation that I had to use a similar method to solve. It’s one of those moments where I’m feeling me age – I have experience with rare things happening to me before! 🤣
  • Had a very “balanced” day for me yesterday – early start, half day of work (where the paeds emergency happened), gym time, went to see friends perform at a concert, dinner and back in bed by 1030pm. Something about that combination was just the right amount of work, hobbies and socialising.
    • Really got me thinking with the new schedule and time I have free, what should I prioritise in those moments?
    • For now, I’m going to just keep it free and do “pointless” things, be it playing computer games or learning some little thing.
  • It was evident to me before, but after going to the charity concert, it really hit home just how talented some of the work colleagues are not just in medicine, but in other fields too.
    • The ENT surgeon is an amazing keyboard player and singer
    • The nurse in endoscopy could sing as a pop-star
    • The scrub nurse is an awesome drummer
    • and so many more! These people could really be semi or fully professional!
  • Maybe it’s having more time or maybe it’s just age and my social circle – I’m seeing people shift from being a bit 2-dimensonial and work focussed and now branch more into their hobbies and side projects – that’s probably more a reflection on me being 2D and only now looking around and seeing people doing these amazing things…
